Our Roots
The history of Sandburn Hall, Griffon Forest, and the Sandburn Estate is deeply rooted in the legacy of Mike Hogg, a local house builder from York.
Mike established his building business, Hogg the Builder, in 1973 and became renowned for his quality homes and exceptional craftsmanship over more than four decades.
Proud of his York heritage, Mike came from a long line of Freemen of the City of York.
A lover of country sports and outdoor activities, Mike dreamed of creating a country estate that would also operate as a commercial business. This vision came to life in 1998 with the establishment of Griffon Forest Holiday Lodges, followed by the opening of Sandburn Hall in 2005. Mike originally trained as a joiner and cabinet maker and had a love for timber, particularly oak, which is evident in the striking design of the Grand Function Hall and hotel reception area, with ‘Cruck’ beams and timber pegs. He was particularly proud of the stunning view from the hall overlooking the golf course he had created.
Sadly, Mike passed away just before the opening of Sandburn Hall in 2005. However, he ensured the business would be in the capable hands of his family, with his sister Margaret, son James, and niece Hayley continuing to honour his vision.
In 2021 one of Mike’s dreams was realised with the opening of a 40 bedroom hotel, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design. The hotel was built with subtle nods to Mike’s legacy, from the oak reception area to the themed suites that reflect his passions for country sports, flying, and his love of York and Alderney. The hotel’s room numbers are individually designed, with numbers etched into oak plaques, representing Mike’s personal interests and the rich history he cherished.
